lespecial is redefining the term “Power Trio.” The three multi-instrumentals from Connecticut continue to command attention from music critics and fans alike through their national tours highlighted by fierce musicianship, creative showmanship and an engaging live show that leaves audiences exhilarated and hungry for more. lespecial’s signature blend of “heavy future groove” combines head banging heavy prog-rock riffage with bone rattling 808s and sub synths, taking listeners on a journey to the musical netherworld through esoteric soundscapes punctuated by raw, primal energy/power. The band’s latest album, “Ancient Homies”, released to critical acclaim on Ropeadope Records at the end of 2020, finds them at a new sonic level and at the apex of potential for a band that has played together since high school and continues to push the boundaries of what a trio can do both in a live setting and in the studio.
Praise for "Ancient Homies" (lespecial's third album, released December 2020)
“Ancient Homies is a stunning synthesis of slammin’ sludge riffage, shoegaze oscillations, breakbeat-meets-Brit pop, psychedelic dub, and brainiac polyriddims, all of it swimming in supersonic sound-design.”
“Ancient Homies’ magnum opus, “Tonberry” is razor-sharp high art, a switchblade serenade fit for the mountain king.”
- Live For Live Music
"On ‘Snell’s Fleet,’ the band’s latest single, lespecial showcases every bit of that heavy future groove descriptor. “Heavy” is easy to place — distorted, chugged riffs have that covered — while “groove,” in this case, comes not in the form of Pantera power but Primus or Bungle-inspired funk/fusion. As for “future,” well, that’s open for interpretation, but with skilled players who have a knack for composition and an imagination that’s gotten them this far already, anything is certainly possible.
"This New York trio has some of the freshest and most interesting genre fusions I’ve heard in a while. Indie rock is the base sound, stretched over a proggy framework of complex and innovative structures. Mixed in with this, though, are hip-hop inspired samples, synth tones, and rhythms. Groovy bursts of fuzzy metal crunch against some of the sparser passages. It’s not hard to find bands that claim to draw influences from all over the musical spectrum, but it’s rare to find one that actually does. lespecial is that rare band."

"Looking for interdimensional grooves and trips through multi-genre wormholes? Look no further than lespecial‘s Ancient Homies."
"Ancient Homies is a monument to the past 20 years of music, whilst forging its own path in experimental music for a diverse crowd. An absolute must-listen of 2020, this record is fun, engaging, and well worth your time."
